Size: Capuchin monkeys are very small compared to other monkeys. They weigh between three and eleven pounds. Females are often smaller than males.
Life Span: Capuchin monkeys can live for anywhere between 30 to 45 years!
Habitat: In the wild, capuchin monkeys live in the rainforests of Central and South America. They spend most of their time up in the trees hunting for food and even sleep on branches. They have long fingers and toes which help them grip the branches tightly as they run along and go about their business. Their long curly tail also helps anchor them and help them keep their balance.
Eating Habits: Capuchins enjoy fruit, nuts, seeds, vegetation, insects, small rodents, eggs, and small birds.
Whare do they get their name? The cap of dark fur on top of a capuchin monkey's head is said to looks like a monk's hood (called a "capuche"). This how the monkey got it's name!
Intelligence: Capuchins are extremely intelligent. Capuchin monkeys have been trained to help people with disabilities. "Helping Hands" is a nonprofit organization in Boston, Massachusetts which trains and places capuchin monkeys in the homes of people with spinal cord injuries. With their small size, natural curiosity, and great use of their hands, capuchins are an ideal fit for helping people who need assistance with daily household tasks.
